What causes low water pressure in a home?

Quick answer

Low pressure can result from local water-company work, a partly closed valve, a blocked fitting, a leak or a problem with a pressure-reducing device. Check whether it affects one tap or the whole property before arranging help.

Work out the pattern

If just one tap is affected, the cause may be its aerator (small mesh outlet), cartridge or local isolation valve. If several taps are weak, check whether neighbours are affected and whether the issue is limited to hot or cold water. A sudden change across the home may point to supply work, a valve problem or a leak.

Pressure and flow are related but not identical. A tap can have a reasonable static pressure yet deliver little water because of a restriction or narrow pipework.

Safe checks

  1. 1Ask neighbours or your water company whether there is planned work or a supply interruption.
  2. 2Check that accessible appliance or local isolation valves have not been accidentally moved; do not force stiff valves.
  3. 3Compare hot and cold flow at more than one tap, and note when the problem occurs.
  4. 4Look for visible leaks or a moving meter when all water use is off. Do not open walls or floors to investigate.

When a leak may be involved

A hidden leak can reduce available flow, but low pressure alone does not prove there is a leak. Watch for damp patches, unexplained meter movement, unusual sounds or a higher-than-usual bill. A plumber can test the system and trace a leak using suitable methods.

If the whole street has low pressure, contact the water company. If only your property is affected, a plumber can check internal pipework, valves and any pressure-reducing equipment.

When to call a plumber

  • Pressure drops suddenly throughout your home.
  • You see damp, hear water running or suspect a leak.
  • A valve is stuck or a pipe fitting is leaking.
  • The water company confirms the supply is normal but the problem remains.
